Preserving Traditions in the Face of Economic Development

PRESERVING TRADITIONS IN THE FACE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Our traditions is our identity. It makes us unique, special and different from other countries.

Today, economic development had greatly affected our lives in many ways, either positively or negatively. Through technology, our life and works were made easier. Transportation and communication is faster and better. Farming also improved. Medicines became available and cheaper. Medical treatments for many diseases and sickness were discovered and now people suffering can be cured from such.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or the computer is now the new craze of the people. Through this, they can do many things even though they are in another place. They can communicate, study and transact business anywhere in any part of the world through the internet.

Even though , ICT made communication between long distant places possible, it can not substitute the physical presence and attention of parents to their children.

Filipinos are known for being conservative, but as you go into places, especially in the cities, you will notice the change in their style of clothing. Long dresses and blouses for women turned into miniskirt, fitted shirt and jeans. Some also wear very short clothes to the point that they are showing too much skin.

The way how people talk especially the children also changed. Before, children use "Po" and "opo" and speak politely in talking with the elders, but now, you can hear them say "bullshit" or "fuck you" and answer back their parents in rough manners. They usually hear these words in the movies.

Sometimes, we also prefer imported goods, frozen or processed foods than our native food. Through technology, meat and vegetables are processed. Instead of buying them fresh, we buy them preserved or processed.

Development is not bad, but our good traditions should not be lost.

the best places to go for entertainment

The best places to go for entertainment in our country are the mountanous areas, like the Northern regions in Luzon.
To have entertainment, we must be informed about these places for us to visit. For me, I prefer the places in region CAR(Cordillera Administrative Region). The traditions practiced, the customs, beliefs and religious rituals are unique and really exciting to discover. Mountain Province, one of the provinces of Region CAR, have different traditions practiced by its municipalities.
Sagada, one of its municipality has the most uique rituals. Gongs, the Sagada-weaved "bahag" used during rituals and wedding ceremonies, the death ceremonies, the hospitable people living here and the unending stories passed by the ancestors form the first generation up to now made it that unique.
Beside these traditions, there are also the beautifu tourist spots. these are mostly visited by tourists all around the world. The " Sumaging" cave, where we are entertained by the beauty of rocks forming a pigpen, swimming pool, king's curtain and other formations.
The mountains surrounding this town, where tall pinetrees grew makes it so green. The lakes, falls here invites tourists to feel the cold waters in this place. The huts where our ancestors lived before are that precious, for it is the first houses before. These were made of grasses, which we call "kugon" in our place.
Aside from these, their are lots and lots more to be discovered including the "dap-ays", where our grandfathers spend most their time when their are things to be done.
For me, entertainment is really where their is enjoyment after discovering. To discover a lot in this country means to have entertainment with the things we will know.

The Philippines in its Quest for Development

The Philippines has engaged itself to lots of fight for freedom, development as well as its standard, its economy.
In the Philippine history, it dealt from the first people who lived in the country up to the present. It also talks about how the country attempted to seek development as years go by.
The first Filipinos depended on hunting and fishing for food. they depended on what nature can provide. There were no permanent houses and their bodies are almost bare. However, these first people also discovered new things like fire as well as its uses. Then they explored more, raised animals, planted seeds and stayed in permanent houses. The people also started to make things out of their own hands. the situation kept on improving as well. This was before the Spaniards came to the Philippines. they barter with neighboring countries but the country's propucts are not good enough because they depended on nature.
The country's system continued to improve more when the Spaniards came. Economy, as well as their lives improved. Despite all these, there are a lot of changes in the country. The people needed to pay the Spaniards. Their entire land was taken by the Spaniards as their own property. They made the encomienda system. Also, people pay through money and not through products anymore.
During the first Republic, the exaction of the clergy and the imposition of forced labor was continued. Native elite and physicians were sent to manage the economic and political system. Moreover, the colonial government opened ports to world shipping.
The Payne Aldrich Act during the American period was a free trade between U.S. and the philippines. During the Commonwealth, Filipino economist headed by Manuel Roxas made concerns on industries , taxation, trade and finance. Included during the Commonwealth are the Domestic Trade and Foreign Commerce.
Meanwhile, presidents of the Third Republic of the Philippines made or further improved developments of the country. Manuel Roxas started the reconstruction of the ecenomy. Elpidio Quirino continued and improved economy through larger production production and proper collection of taxes. He also gave amnesty to the rebels, the Huks. On the other hand, Ramon Magsaysay focused more on the poor while Garcia implied the importance of the country's products(sariling produkto). Diosdado Macapagal also helped by giving land to farmers. During the Marcos' Regime, farmers were given technical and financial land price support. The country gained enough prodution of rice by then. Buildings, roads, bridges and others were built for transp[ortation. Despite all the improvements made by Marcos, a decline in the economy was observed due to anomaly, too much expenses and high priced oil. After Aquino's assasination, tourism went down.
The Philippines went through steps and steps of development in order to improve and survive. Technology, which keeps on rising up is currently used almost by everyone and everywhere, young and old alike. Truly, the Philippines came from zero until it keeps on growing up into a more matured country despite being a third world country.
