Preserving Traditions in the Face of Economic Development

PRESERVING TRADITIONS IN THE FACE OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Our traditions is our identity. It makes us unique, special and different from other countries.

Today, economic development had greatly affected our lives in many ways, either positively or negatively. Through technology, our life and works were made easier. Transportation and communication is faster and better. Farming also improved. Medicines became available and cheaper. Medical treatments for many diseases and sickness were discovered and now people suffering can be cured from such.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or the computer is now the new craze of the people. Through this, they can do many things even though they are in another place. They can communicate, study and transact business anywhere in any part of the world through the internet.

Even though , ICT made communication between long distant places possible, it can not substitute the physical presence and attention of parents to their children.

Filipinos are known for being conservative, but as you go into places, especially in the cities, you will notice the change in their style of clothing. Long dresses and blouses for women turned into miniskirt, fitted shirt and jeans. Some also wear very short clothes to the point that they are showing too much skin.

The way how people talk especially the children also changed. Before, children use "Po" and "opo" and speak politely in talking with the elders, but now, you can hear them say "bullshit" or "fuck you" and answer back their parents in rough manners. They usually hear these words in the movies.

Sometimes, we also prefer imported goods, frozen or processed foods than our native food. Through technology, meat and vegetables are processed. Instead of buying them fresh, we buy them preserved or processed.

Development is not bad, but our good traditions should not be lost.

Yes. Our very own Cordillera has lots and lots of VERY GOOD TRADITIONS to preserve. That's in us. If we want to totally forget those or bring them back.

~^^~ HigH FiVe FoR YoU! Nice blog! I really admire it! It is really nice and informative. I really like the last past. Indeed, development is not bad but we also have to conserve the things we have. Our country's development is like pictures. We can take many pictures but we also have to keep the old ones 'cause they carry memories considered irreplaceable. With these photos, we can remember the old times and we can share it to the next generation. ~^^~ Good job!
